Update – May 25, 2020
JDC West 2021 moving to a virtual competition with a new theme; JDC West: The Human Advantage to take place in 2022 at the University of Manitoba.

After spending several weeks closely monitoring the progression of the pandemic, having many lengthy discussions, and doing everything we can to stay as informed as possible, we’re thrilled to finally announce that JDC West will see its first ever virtual competition hosted by the Asper School of Business in 2021! This will include all components of the competition: Academics, Debate, Sports, and Social! We are still exploring many ideas for charity, but can assure you that it will remain part of the competition, as we believe that community service and involvement is more important in today’s world than ever before. Additionally, JDC West: The Human Advantage will return as an in-person competition, hosted by the Asper School in Winnipeg in 2022.

The OC is excited to begin this journey into an entirely new version of JDC West, which will be presented under a brand new theme. This is an opportunity to stretch our creative muscles and come up with entirely new ways to bring you the same calibre of skill development, team bonding, and exciting energy you’ve all come to expect as competitors.

We are currently looking at all aspects of the competition and how they can be held virtually. At this time, we want to assure you that we are committed to providing all of your teams with an amazing competition experience, and while different, endeavour for 2021 to be as impactful as any past JDC West competition.

We hope you’re as excited as we are to head into this uncharted territory. We look forward to making JDC West 2021 the best it can be.

Update – May 4, 2020

The JDC West 2021 Organizing Committee understands the concern for the provisions that are in place to ensure the safety of all our stakeholders involved in the competition. We are doing that with the mindset of adhering to direction provided by the Public Health Agency of Canada and the respective provincial heads of government as they gather information, assess risk, and recommend actions based on the state of the nation.

We will continue to monitor and identify environmental factors that can act as indicators of the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic, including considerations based on the decisions of all the universities involved in the competition.

We are committing to frequent and open communication with the captains on what precautions we plan to follow and what the next steps are. Our major concern is the actual competition taking place in January 2021. As we are living in unprecedented times, we have to consider plans and measures a week at a time, and we cannot speak on the state of the nation in a few months’ time. However, we will provide updates as they become available and we will likely be able to provide a status update within the next month.

In the meantime, we recommend utilizing digital applications for team meetings (Zoom, Hangouts, etc.) whether its full team meetings, executive meetings, or small, academic/debate team meetings. This can also be used as an opportunity to maintain team morale and provide updates at-large. As most athletic and social teams begin training in the fall months, we will be in touch should the nation or provinces still be practicing social distancing in the September – December months. We will have a better idea of our direction moving forward within the next two months, as most of the universities are making decisions for their fall semesters by the end of June. Again, at this time, utilize digital platforms and communications to your advantage and keep in contact should you have any questions.

We thank the JDC West community for your patience and understanding during this time.
